The policy statement from the Committee on Fetus and Newborn (CFN) from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) makes several statements regarding Advance Practice Nursing.  The CFN notes that “medical care” may be provided by a Nurse Practitioner or Clinical Nurse Specialist when supervised by an appropriately credentialed physician (Committee on Fetus and Newborn, 2003. p. 1453).  They recognize that credentialing for practice of APNs is not consistent from state to state, or among institutions, however recommendation is made to maintain appropriate national certification of practice and specialty (CFN, 2003).
